WSHGC Profile

The Western Soarers Hanggliding and Paragliding Club (formerly Dalwallinu HGC) was formed in 1991 by a small group of hang gliding devotees. Andrew Humpheries was the inaugural President, and also taught many of the members to fly. Membership numbers have peaked and troughed over the years, and currently stand at around 30. What we lack in numbers we make up for in enthusiasm and genuine devotion to the sport.

We fly at many different sites around the State, though much of our summer flying is based at Wyalkatchem (about a 2 hour drive east north east from Perth.) The area boasts a good road network for easy retrieves, and lift regularly reaches 10,000 feet ASL. Flights of several hundred kilometres are possible in most directions. The club owns various equipment including hang gliders, radios, instruments, harnesses, tow-cars, winches, ropes and tow-gauges. In 1998 we built a hanger on the Wyalkatchem airstrip to store equipment and cater for visiting aero tow tug pilots. We have hosted the West Australian State Championships (WA Open) every year since 1991, and hosted the Australian Open in 1999.
